Meeme worked as a casual worker at a pineapple farm near Thika town. He rarely earned an annual leave to travel back to his home. He was 23 years old. But whether it was a good or bad luck, He had married at that tender age!

He had a child and a wife. Due to the prevailing economic hardships, he left them at his mother’s home in the village! He could not sustain his family at his place of work! The pay was not that all much! He still needed to establish his empire with his queen and the three year old prince!

Again, at home, she could do some sort of farming and at least sustain her life there too! The combination of her farming even though subsistence, and his earnings, when put together could at least build them a decent house. In future, their combined efforts could have earned them some capital to start a small business that they could do together. Or the wife could start the business while he sustained it before it picked up! After it picked, he was ready to come and join her in their family hustle! He was sure that he had started his life well and he could be someone great in future!

Even though he had left schooling at the age of eighteen and her also, he was sure that together with his high school and a six years not only a friend but also a fiancée, would make it well.

He trusted her! She trusted him! They dated since when they were in form one! They loved each other! This was his belief! He believed that theirs was a true love story! All these were his beliefs! They had a kid during their sixth year romantic friendship!

Now he is at the pineapple farm working there! A place far away from his rural place. She is at her mother in-law home in one of Tigania East villages! He believed everything was very okay! She was a church girl! He was a church boy! She could hardly miss those pastor ordained sermons and weekly meetings for the prayers and other church activities!

You know how much the hardworking preacher had to extra work in reaching his followers for home based prayers?! He really traversed several villages paying his faithful’s some courtesy visits and conducting prayers! It is a norm for the faithfuls to have the men of cloak visit them.

To Meeme that was not a problem! He was not the man who was against the men of cloak visiting his family and conducting some prayers of blessings! No! He was not that man! He didn’t have any issue with that. Even if he was to be told that today pastor Mwabiro was in your home praying, there could be no any problem with that!

Trouble knocked when he came at home! First, he did not secure a leave during the Christmas time. So he came in the month of March. That is when he secured some fourteen days leave!

As a man, who had a family, he left his workplace in the afternoon. It was on thirtieth march. He made some family shopping. Both for his mother and for his wife. He didn’t forget about his three year old prince! He bought him some gifts and toys!

He travelled. Reached his village at some hours late in the evening. At around ten P.M. He reached his mother and other siblings, greeted them all, and exchanged some pleasantries with his queen. Due to some travel   fatigue, he just slept by 12.00 midnight. They didn’t make love that night!

Tomorrow came. He woke up late and spend the whole day there in the compound. When the night fell, they ate the fruits of love! It was really long since he left. Their moments were really as sweet as when they knew each other! When they were all in form one!

The next morning knocked! He hanged around again! But he left in the afternoon to go and meet some village and his childhood friends! He met some of them! Exchanged some greetings here and there! Bought some of his villagers some glasses of the village brews! When the sun started disappearing in the west, he left again to his home! This was now first of April!

Some of his friends had something to tell him! But since it was on a much hyped April first termed as a fool’s day and day to tell lies, they didn’t say anything unto him!

That night again, he knew his wife! Their moments were still sweet with their fire rekindled as new as it was in the beginning! The next day came again! He left to his villagers in the afternoon again!

It is from this point that some fellas rumored that this guy’s wife knew the pastor! It was not once, not twice but severally! He overheard it but he never trusted any of such rumours! After all they wanted him fail in his family life! He told himself. He knew his wife since she was in form one! He trusted her! She trusted him!

He went back home! But he had doubts! Before he could do anything or asking his wife anything, he asked one of his close and a long time village friend about what was being murmured in the ghetto? His friend told him that “it is true Ngete! I feared to break those news unto you!”

What? It was really shocking! The same pastor? The same one who is rumoured in the village to be hiv-positive? Yes! It is the one and only! How did they get that story was his next question! “He is the one who was boasting to some village men how he had a hold of your wife! How happy he was”! His friend told him! “Really?! He boasting and saying himself that he slept with my wife”?

“Yes”! His friend said!

He left and went straight to his wife! He confronted her! To his surprise, she accepted that it was true! “I fell on his traps dear”! She said!  She slept with him! Not once! What? How could she do like that? How did she betray him? But she pleaded guilty. She accepted that she betrayed her longtime lover!

Did they use any protection? She opened up and said that they never had anything like protected sex! This baffled him! He was perplexed! It is already at the night of the second of April. He come on thirtieth March. He knew her from thirty first March. The next day is on third April!

Another hell was that all the public health workers were on industrial strike! He wanted to access some post exposure drugs to protect himself against the deadly human immune virus! Where will get not only the drugs but also counseling?!

He was no longer stable in his mind! Some would say he was no longer stable upstairs! He is now challenged! Both psychological and physiological sickness were hanging on him!

The following day in the morning, they left to the nearby catholic missionary dispensary! They found those Italian sisters! They were too sorry for him and his wife! Unfortunately, they didn’t have the drugs by that time! What they had was only the counselling! They advised him to be courageous! To face the devil strongly! They encouraged him not to neglect the kid in case they turned out to be positive!

But this would only happen after some months! Because the viruses would not show up in the first two months!

Another advice he got was to forgive his wife and in case they part ways, he should not think of murder! To either the wife or for him to commit suicide!

The third one was the hope of still remaining negative despite the risk he had already gone through! He was told that the pastor might not be positive! But just the village stigma! Again! If he was positive and the viral load was below, he might not have transmitted the deadly virus! Again, if he had transmitted the virus to his wife, he had chances of still remaining negative! All this, he was told to trust and place his hope to his heavenly Father!

He left the catholic mission dispensary and he hurried to the local chemists, to still look for the drugs! They say that when a mongoose strikes your homestead, they usually follow each other! Several of them. In his local chemists, they didn’t have the drugs too. This was too sad for him!

At this point, the day was ending. Turning into a night again! A night of more nightmares. The following day being fourth of April! His fourteen days leave was no longer good to his soul, mental and bones anymore! He was now turning pale! His eyes red as blood! His lips were dry! His tongue was no longer able to pronounce any word the way it is supposed to be pronounced!!

The short form of PEP drugs was now an uphill task to his tongue! Public healthy hospitals are closed! Healthy workers are fighting with the county governments! They are not being paid! Local chemists are not having that important drug. The nearby mission dispensary is out of the drugs too! Too sad! His world was ending! It had come into a standstill!

The only option he had was now to try his final luck! By taking a van to the next nearest town, in search for any other mission hospital and look for the drugs! If this could not happen, the next was to take his life out of him!

He found them! He took them!

After some months, he was tested and he turned out to be negative! His former wife too was negative!

However, he never trusted anyone! Including his own brain and soul! How could they sell him in believing that he could not be betrayed? That anyone could be trusted and still be faithful to another person?!!!

Meeme lived with his son! They parted ways with the mother of his kid, the sweetheart of six years and a mother of a three year old son! It was almost a decade of love! But to him, it turned out to be a decade of being lied on! Yes! He believed that she had been cheating on him for the whole of that duration they stayed together!

Nothing could convince him that he was never cheated on with anyone else apart from pastor Mwabiro! You couldn’t convince him that it was only that short duration of time, but he believed that it was a full decade of cheatings!

He decided to live like that! Trusting no one else including himself! He concluded that the new life that he was now living was a perfect life! That was according to him! He concluded that he was a genius when a friend of him, from the village narrated another story to him. He believed that by choosing not to trust anyone in his entire remaining life, was a noble cause that he did!

This friend of him, told him that he also had a fiancée. That was known as Makena. Makena told him some revelations from herself when she was a school girl. She had told him about her ordeal and her friends. A story that made them part. If she knew that they would part she could not have narrated it to him.

Makena, his friend’s former fiancée, was a student in the intermediary level! Whenever the schools were on recess, especially in that month of December long holiday, she used to attend some organized church rallies!

These rallies were carried out in some specific boarding schools! The pastors of the concerned denominations would select one school where they could hold their rallies for either a week or even two weeks depending on the time, theme and the denomination tastes and preferences!

It was here where Makena, together with her friends (of course her age mates) learnt some new lessons! Makena would leave her parents’ home for the rally! The parents would not hesitate in giving their children permission for attending church rallies! It was not a bad idea after all! It is from here that their daughters and sons would learn good morals based on religious backgrounds!

Attending the rally itself was a good and a wise decision! Who would not like their kids to have such morals?  No one!

But the problem was not the parents! Not the men of the word! Not the age mates! The problem was the moral decays in some elements of the society! You see, the preachers were not aliens! No! Some preachers were of course parents! Some of the age mates were of course among the preachers! But whoever said, that the whole meat is made to rot by just one fly, he was never wrong!

These rotten flies were everywhere. In schools, at homes, and in these camps!

Makena was an innocent girl! Yes! She was an innocent girl. She didn’t know anything like sexual intercourse! No! She never knew that!

Here she is! She was preaching in high school during the Christian union services and fellowships at the school. She used to attend and she was an active member during the weekend challenge rallies!

She was in this camp still as one of the preachers! She could spend the whole day either preaching or preparing for the main preacher. Referred to as the facilitator! Later in the evening, the preachers were having supper in different room from the other congregation!

It was during this time, when the preachers (especially the young ones) were having supper and some evening service preparations. When they sandwiched Makena and her colleagues as they took their evening delicacies!

Makena and her friends, being innocent girls, could not resist! After all these are men of holier than thou!

But the hell started breaking loose after few days of being sandwiched! These men would caress, overturn and under turn these little angels!

It was from these activities, when these angels started experiencing some un-explainable feelings in their bodies!

One of them, when trying to tell their ordeal to others was overheard as saying: (nilianza kuskia nywaaa!) Like I was being cut with a razor blade in my intestines! Nywaa! Then my heart started over pumping the blood in my arteries and drained my ventricles! The nywaa sedation feeling took my breathing! I started feeling like I was being oxygen indebted!

They continued touching and touching them! The nywaa sedition continued for the next few days! Before they left the camp, the nywaa feelings had matured to some unspeakables! All this in the name of the December school holiday church camps!

Makena was narrating all this to her friends! This was happening during their fourth year of high school studies! This was the time when they used to wait for their national examination results!

To know their fate! If they were to join the university education (universities were few and the rest could only think about joining forces. The middle level college education was not in public limelight.) The results were much hyped and at this time, any kid would be easily drawn into other abomination activities.

But Jenny (one of her friend) had the same problem! In her case it was not the preaching cohort but her fellow campers! Her fellow age mates! Who were also in attendance! She could not fathom their reasons of being in attendance! Were they there for the rally? Was it for religious purposes or it was just mating reasons? Were they running away from their homes? To avoid the farming season and grazing activities?

She never found these answers from her friends! But her friend, Lorna replied to their stories! She also had a story to tell!

Her story was the same! But in different environment! She used to visit her mentor in the house of worship! The man of cloak! (I don’t know if it is cloak or clock or both! Who knows?) The guy introduced this teenager in the act of touch me I touch you! As the P square singers of Nigeria had said it! Yes! Touch me I touch you oh!

She was afraid! She was reluctant! But the man had guts to let her learn that sisi kama watumishi kitu yetu haina dhambi hata ukishashika. (We as the preachers, our genitalias are holy than thou! Even if you touch it!) “Just touch it cute!” The guy said unto her!

But due to her naivety, she touched it! Turned it! Measured it! Cuddled it! It became a norm to her! Unfortunately, this man of sisi hapana thambi tumeruhusiwa kushika hii vitu left! He was kind of transferred! Then to her, it was real! It was a norm. After all she was just a mentee! She thought that it was true! It was true that watumishi wako holier than thou!

She met another man of cloak! This time round, she met the true man of cloak! She stayed with him for some time! Days passed! Weeks passed! But the man of cloak did not mention anything like “touch my Otile oh! My otile is holy even if you touched it! We are allowed because we are righteous!”

One of those days, she gathered her courage and asked him! “Why don’t you let me touch your Otile like Brother Mate?”

The man of cloak was astonished! He asked her how and what she meant! She narrated to him what pastor Mate had told her and what she did with his Otile!

This man told her that such an act was sinful! He warned her never to let anyone else learn such an act! She should never tell anyone else that story!

But she was here with her friends! Same year high school graduands awaiting for their secondary education national results!

Makena could not believe this from her friend Lorna! How on earth such men would dare treating them like that? Was it because of their naivety or they were such dump fools. Who didn’t know that they had a most sought part of their bodies! A part that would may be make them an instant millionaires if they utilized it well?

But Lorna informed her that that could be a wrong path! It was the men in the preaching camp that were wrong! That that nywaaa sedition was leathal and the men who had made them to go through the nywaa feeling would not go unpunished!!

When Meeme heard this story about the men of cloak cheating the school girls in all manner of how they are safe, and how they are allowed to touch their genitalias, because they were holy and righteous, he was perturbed!

He remembered his childhood memories while growing up in his native village of AMUUKI! He remembered about the village prophet! That man of prayers! The man who was regarded as the evil chaser!

He used to pray and prophesy for you! In case you had a feeling that your neighbor is behind your sickness, then you had only one thing to do. To prove if he or she is the person behind your miseries or just other natural mysteries!

That thing was Just to a visit to Prophet John! Yes! He was the village prophet when Meeme was growing up! But the only thing that used to keep on disturbing him was the fact that it was only women who used to pay a visit to the Prophet John’s homestead! Few men rarely visited! The only men who could visit were referred to as the women in men! This was pure mockery!

If you had a persisting sickness, or any other problem, then Prophet John was there to get you sorted out!  Just visit him! He will say some prayers for you. He will start speaking in some languages that you could not understand! The words that were not from this planet!

After all the men of prayers could speak in languages! But forgive me here! I don’t know if they speak in languages that you don’t understand when there is no person who is there that can understand that language! I thought disciples were speaking in tongues in such a way that all people who were around them would understand what they were saying in their own languages. There was no need for an interpreter.

I thought that for someone to speak in tongues, he should be speaking a specific language that someone else, who is not from his tribe can understand what the speaking man his meaning!

In one occasion, John had visited a certain homestead, where he went on to prophesy and claiming healing. He visited an old man and his wife. But there youngest boy was there! It is a norm for the youngest kid to hang around with his parents when in his/her below tens!

John was there, at around 9.00AM! The rest of the siblings were already in their daily domestic chores. Some were looking after the livestock in the grazing fields and the rest were in the Shamba working there. Now the young kid, was seated on a stone that used to be on the left hand side of his father’s house. He used to seat there as he enjoyed the morning sun rays! The morning sun heat are not only sweet but also good for the young kid’s healthy!

John entered directly in their sitting room. After short duration of exchanging greetings, discussing some village issues here and there, he went directly to his main objective! The objective that had brought him there! It was time to pray and prophesy!

He told the old couple to close their eyes as they pray! But the young boy was there! He was keen to observe a prophet make a mighty prophesy! When his parents were closing their eyes to pray, Meeme could not close his! John was not dump on this!

Maybe he was aware that young boys are notorious! Perhaps he had encountered a situation where he was praying and some funny boys were not closing their eyes as he was conducting a miracle prayer! After all boys are tricky! They can even pretend that they are closing their eyes by covering their forehead with their palms yet they look at what you are doing via their palms as you think that they have covered their eyes completely!

John observed the boy! But the kid was also eager to see a prophet making a miracle. So when he was praying, while the couple had their eyes locked, Meeme was looking at them keenly! John observed that and realized that the boy was really observing his actions with his eyes wide open!

He told his parents that there were some spirits that were creating some obstacles in their prayers. These spirits were responsible for the short cuttings of the prayer. He pretended that that was the situation. But his problem was the boy looking at him. He could not close his eyes. He told them that there was an evil spirit that was coming via the gate. The gate was not very far from the house.

He told them that for them to have a successful prayer, the evil spirits had to be blocked from entering the house at the gate! To achieve this, the little boy was to stand at the centre of the gate. He was to be the obstacle to the spirits that were interfering with the prayers! He wondered how he could go at the gate to prevent the spirits that were interfering with the prayers!

Meme wondered on this. But he had to obey and show respect to his parents and the prophet. ”Could the spirits not pass over him and head straight to the room”? If for sure he had to prevent them why did he not request him to stand at the house door or maybe they shut the door?!

But john was aware that if the boy was to stand at the door, he will still observe what he was doing while he and his parents were deep in prayers! Again, if he could request that they shut the door, the boy would accompany them in the room. He could still pose the same challenge. So the right thing is to send him away to the gate! He becomes an obstacle to the perceived spirits since he was becoming an obstacle to his prayers!

Meeme headed on that and he walked immediately at the gate. He was to obstruct the spirits there from entering in the house where prayers were being conducted.

John was now at peace. The boy had left from where he was seated on. He proceeded with his prayers but the boy could still look at the room although it was in darkness now that he was outside and they were inside! He spewed some words like this “The voluntary service, service voluntary and voluntary services!”  Those were some of the words that Meeme could hear while at the gate!

After those short prayers, he promised the old couple that he would receive some visions that would guide him later on where the evil charm had been placed in their room by the witch! He also promised to come immediately received the visions!

To their surprise, what John was doing on this first day of the prayers, was to identify a possible place in the room where he could be in a position to cover himself from being exposed while he was extracting the planted charm. He identified the darkest corner in their room!

Few days later on, John paid them a visit. This time round was earlier enough! He did not want it to be in a broad light as the suns light would be strong and to some extent, it could illuminate on him and make him susceptible and vulnerable when he was carrying out his activities!

Other siblings were there! This time they had not gone on carrying out their daily activities. They had just finished taking their breakfast! But Meeme was still there! He had witnessed the first day activities! He was the youngest kid! He was neither assigned to those farm activities nor looking after the livestock on the field! No’! His was just the light domestic chores around his parents like being sent to warm them food, warm tea, bringing them this and that at home! Those were his duties! Duties that made him to be around his parents throughout hence becoming an obstacle to Prophet John!

Another thing, he was not the soft kid! He was really curious! He wanted to know and discover anything around him! This made him to observe any activity with a lot of attentiveness!

Prophet John was there! He walked directly to the corner of the room. The corner that was behind the door! It was really darker as opposed to any other part of the room. He said some prayers and requested to be given a fork jembe and a panga to dig where the charm had been placed!

He started his work! After digging for some feet, say one and half feet to two feet, he started spewing some words again. He requested one of the siblings to go and bring him some water in a plastic jar that was there. The elder sister brought him the needed water! He told them that water was curative to many things and he had foreseen in his visions that the charm was put in a plastic syringe!

Water would make this charm jump from the hole that he had dug and it would made the charm float on it! He spewed some expletive words as he was pouring water to the hole. He requested them to be serious in prayers lest the charm jumps on everyone. He poured the water and mysteriously, he placed his plastic livestock syringe on the water!

But Meeme was still serious and he observed that the man had the syringe in his pullover! So to him, he believed that the man was looking for a chance to throw it on the water! After he observed and was sure that everyone had closed his eyes deep in prayers, he shouted and said! “Here it is”!

When the syringe came into contact with the water, the chemical inside it was producing some cracking sound. According to Meeme, the chemical was white in colour! He up to date believes that the chemical was the famous wound chemicals that was used in those days to cure wounds or maybe it was some sodium metal that were put in the syringe!

After that, the prophet prayed again and said that the chemical was supposed to be burned! However, since it was a charm and it was planted by the evil ones, he needed to burn it himself. It was not wise for the couple to burn it. It could still affect them. But to him, it was not a problem since the charm had no any power over prophet!

That how he left his parents with his supposed to be a charm syringe with the chemical inside it. He said he will burn it at his home! He was given some cash as a wage for his efforts in ensuring an evil free family!

He did not stop there! John went on with his evil chasing activities. He did not only carry out those services to his village of Amuuki only!

He grew fame! He was now referred in the neighboring villages! A word went like a bush fire on a dry windy season! That there was a great prophet who was living in the land of Amuuki people!  He was a heaven sent man of prayers! He was a new found solution to the witchcraft raided villages! A man who would not only prophesy to families on who was bedeviling them but also uproot all of the planted charms whether in their houses, compounds or in their farms!

You see if someone’s kids were not performing well in school, John had the solution. He could tell the parent of the kid the person who could be behind his children’s poor performance in the classroom! Thanks to God that he did not point at teachers by saying that he has seen a vision showing him that they were (teachers) the ones behind the poor performance of their kids!

He was now the most sought person in the whole division and in its environs! He was a hot cake!

A rare breed of a man! He did not have any time to be at his home taking care of his family. He even requested his wife to claim that she has also been awarded the gift of prophesy! She too joined him in praying and prophesying! When he was traversing different villages in different locations, his wife was also busy praying for people and prophesying unto them. She was now healing them from the evils of witchcraft and the witch!

Which village didn’t have a witch anyway? All the villages were perceived to harbour a witch. A witch who was derailing other villagers! Either by bewitching their kids such that they performed poorly in school, bewitching their parents to fall ill so that they fail in providing for their kids. So that they fail in order that their sons and daughters dropped out of the school or bewitching the villagers so that they never prospered in life. In short these village wizards were out to impoverish everyone who showed any signs of working hard and succeeding in life!

Succeeding in life in these villages was to have several herds of cattle and other domestic livestock. Having many children and having all the daughters get married or whoever would remain well health wise!

The great surprise, not many were pro academics! But still these wizards had the iotas of bewitching their fellow villagers!

It is from these widespread witchcraft superstitious that made John, “the prophet” to be the famous and a rare breed of a man! Almost every family in every village in the division and its environs would sought for his services! Services to chase away the witchcraft.

John went on prophesying and uprooting the planted charms in many homesteads’ compounds, farms and houses! He did this for several years as Meeme was grewing up. He still remembers a certain old lady, who her husband had died at old age and left her as a widow but still at her eighties!

He many a times used to pay a visit to this old Mama has he was growing up. Many a times he was there to assist her in the farm during the time of harvesting. His mother used to tell him that “just go and help that old lady! She said that since her kids were now also old people and they never lived near her, she could not have any one to let her son or daughter help her!” She could claim that if it was possible for her to mould some babies from clay, she could have done it. She was too lonely!

It was at this time when Meeme had gone there to assist her in harvesting, when her son, Samuel told Meeme that prophet John was a liar! She had told him that “when you come, I will request my son, Samuel, (in his forties) to accompany you at the farm so that you cannot be lonely there at the farm”!

Samuel spent the day in the farm with Meeme harvesting the crops. He asked him why he was saying that john was a liar. He replied that john had lied to her old mother! He had told her that her piece of land had some charms planted there! They must have been planted under one of the huge acacia trees in her farm! They were planted so that she could lose her Shamba to some people who wanted to grab it from her. And also, it was the reason why she had become sickly!

John had promised her that he will fight for her spiritually! But her son, Samuel did not agree with his mother! He told her, “Vaine (a word that they used while referring to their mother in their native language) John is lying to you! There is nothing planted at the farm.” Samuel told his mother.

“I know john will come and plant some old used body lotion containers somewhere in the farm! When no one is around! Then he will come, pray for her, and then dig it out! She will be convinced that it is someone else who had planted it there! Yet I know it is him (john) who will have planted it there”! Samuel told Meeme!

Are you sure that he will do that? Meeme asked Samuel?

“Yes! He will do it! You see, I was told that he visited a certain village in Amaara division. He told one lady there that it was her mother in-law who was bewitching her so that she cannot raise a family with his son! But do you know what he did? “No! What did he do?” asked Meeme!

He told the young lady that he will pray for her and uproot all the evil charms that had been planted in the floor beneath her bed by her mother in-law!”  “Really? How did she plant it in her bed? Asked Meeme!

I don’t know! But he went on there to remove that witchcraft from her house! Finally, he prayed for her and told her that he was shown a vision! In this vision, he was told that he need to give her a baby boy! This baby boy, if he sleeps with her and begets that son, then he will grow up and become the president!”

“What? He was shown all that? Did she have the baby boy with him then”? Meeme asked again while shocked! He remembered how john was coming at his parents homestead. How he was praying and all the directives he was giving them to keep him at bay so that he could not have seen what he was doing and interrupt him!

You know how boys are? He can shout at you in front of everyone and say, “Oh! Noooo! I have seen you remove it from your trousers! You cheating us! This can be really embarrassing. And boys are known for such characters.

Samuel told him that the lady slept with the man! To her surprise, she did not have one baby! But a triplets! She was not able to get them educated. How then they would have become even a village chiefs? Again, who could among them been the president he had prophesied to the young mother?

That how he ruined her marriage life! But as they say it! “Whatever goes around, comes back”, John had multiple issues back at his family too. He did not have time to raise his kids. Their kids grew up lacking parental guidance and later on in their adult lives. They became ungovernable!
